Cyclone Arnab made landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast early Wednesday, October 28, bringing heavy rainfall, powerful winds and dangerous coastal conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) classified the system as a very severe cyclonic storm and warned that wind speeds could reach 125 kmph, with gusts of up to 140 kmph.
The storm has raised concerns across coastal Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring Odisha, where authorities have issued weather alerts and stepped up emergency preparations. Heavy rainfall, strong winds and possible flooding pose risks to vulnerable communities, infrastructure and transport services.

The weather system brought strong winds and rough sea conditions to coastal areas. Officials warned that the cyclone could damage houses, uproot trees, disrupt electricity supplies and affect road connectivity in vulnerable districts. Coastal communities were advised to remain indoors and follow instructions issued by local authorities. Fishermen were also warned against venturing into affected sea areas because of dangerous weather and rough conditions.
Heavy Rainfall Alert Issued for Odisha and Nearby States
The impact of Cyclone Arnab extends beyond Andhra Pradesh, with Odisha also facing the threat of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several districts. Areas including Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Rayagada and Koraput were among the regions identified in weather warnings. The storm’s wider circulation could also bring significant rainfall to parts of Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and other neighbouring states. Depending on the cyclone’s movement and associated weather conditions, these regions could experience waterlogging, localised flooding and disruptions to normal activities.

Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable locations to monitor official weather bulletins and avoid flooded roads, riverbanks and exposed coastal areas. Residents have also been advised to secure loose outdoor objects and keep essential supplies accessible.
Authorities Strengthen Emergency Measures as Cyclone Arnab Advances
Authorities in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have intensified precautionary measures to reduce the risk to life and property. Emergency response teams have been placed on alert, while evacuation and shelter arrangements have been organised for people living in low-lying and cyclone-prone areas.
Officials have also focused on maintaining essential services and preparing for potential damage to electricity networks, roads and other infrastructure. Residents in vulnerable communities have been urged to move to designated shelters when instructed by local authorities.
