Netanyahu open to Gadi Eisenkot alliance as Israel faces political deadlock

Netanyahu-Eisenkot coalition

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly kept the possibility of forming a coalition with opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot open following Israel’s inconclusive parliamentary election. The political development comes as Netanyahu’s bloc falls short of the majority required to form a government, raising uncertainty over the country’s next administration. The prime minister was considering different political options despite publicly rejecting the idea of a unity government. Netanyahu is concerned that Eisenkot could form an alternative alliance with Arab-led parties and ultra-Orthodox factions, potentially ending his leadership.

Netanyahu-Eisenkot Coalition Possibility Amid Political Uncertainty

Israel’s October 27, 2026, parliamentary election left the country’s 120-member Knesset without a clear majority. Netanyahu’s bloc secured 53 seats, while the opposition bloc led by Eisenkot won 48 seats. Arab-led parties secured another 19 seats, giving them a potentially decisive role in government formation. A coalition combining Eisenkot’s bloc and the Arab-led parties could command enough parliamentary support to form a government. However, disagreements over political priorities and the conditions for cooperation remain significant obstacles.

Netanyahu has strongly opposed the prospect of his political rivals joining forces with Arab-led parties. Meanwhile, Eisenkot has outlined conditions for potential coalition partners, including positions on Hamas and its weapons. Arab lawmakers could also provide external support rather than formally joining a coalition. The coming days are expected to be crucial as Israel’s election results move towards official certification. President Isaac Herzog is scheduled to consult representatives of elected parties before deciding which candidate should receive the mandate to form the next government.

The Netanyahu-Eisenkot coalition possibility highlights the uncertainty surrounding Israel’s political future. Whether Netanyahu can retain power through a broader alliance or the opposition can assemble a viable alternative will depend on negotiations among the country’s political parties.
