Bihar Police shot and injured Nandan Yadav, the main accused in the Jamui minor assault case, during an encounter on Monday as the fugitive suspect was finally cornered after days on the run, officials said.
Yadav, who had been evading arrest since the case came to light, sustained a bullet injury to his leg during the exchange with police in Jamui district. A second wanted accused, identified as Hare Ram, also suffered a fractured leg while attempting to escape during the same operation. Both men were subsequently taken to Jamui Sadar Hospital for treatment. Confirming the police action, Bihar’s Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), K.S. Anupam, said the encounter took place as officers moved to nab the two absconding suspects. A Special Investigation Team (SIT), formed to probe the case and supervised by the Jamui Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), had been tracking the fugitives.
The case stems from a disturbing video that went viral on social media, showing a group of young men misbehaving with a school-going boy and girl, including inappropriate touching of the girl. The clip triggered nationwide outrage after it spread widely online, prompting swift action from local authorities. Following the uproar, police identified all the accused in the case and arrested three of them earlier. Charges were registered under Sections 128, 74 and 75 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), along with Sections 8 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The National Commission for Women had also taken cognizance of the matter after the video surfaced.
With Monday’s encounter, Nandan Yadav — the prime accused who had remained the most wanted face in the case — and accomplice Hare Ram are now in custody-bound treatment, while the search continues for the remaining absconding suspects named in the case.
