Israel and Lebanon Agree to Ceasefire Plan if Hezbollah Stop Attacks

Israel Lebanon Ceasefire

Israel and Lebanon have agreed in principle to implement a new ceasefire framework aimed at reducing tensions along their shared border. According to a statement released by the United States, the agreement will only move forward if Hezbollah completely halts its attacks against Israel and meets several additional conditions.

The announcement comes after another round of violence in southern Lebanon, where Israeli airstrikes reportedly killed multiple people, while Hezbollah launched rockets toward northern Israel. The latest escalation had raised concerns that the fragile truce reached earlier this year could collapse entirely.

Ceasefire Depends on Hezbollah Withdrawal

Under the proposed arrangement, Hezbollah fighters would be required to leave areas stretching from the Litani River to the Israeli border. The plan also calls for stronger control by the Lebanese Armed Forces in designated zones, reducing the influence of armed groups operating outside state authority.

US officials said they would assist in establishing pilot security zones where the Lebanese military would assume exclusive responsibility for maintaining order and security.

The agreement reflects a broader effort by international mediators to ensure that future relations between Israel and Lebanon are determined through government-to-government engagement rather than by non-state actors.

Further Talks Scheduled for June 22

Diplomatic discussions between both sides are expected to continue, with another round of talks scheduled for June 22. Negotiators hope the upcoming meeting will help transform the current understanding into a more comprehensive and lasting agreement.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed optimism ahead of the announcement, saying the objective is to create a stable security framework in Lebanon that operates independently of Hezbollah’s military activities.

Fresh Clashes Test Fragile Truce

Despite ongoing negotiations, violence has continued on both sides of the border.

Lebanese authorities reported casualties from Israeli strikes in southern regions, including emergency responders who were reportedly targeted while carrying out humanitarian duties. Additional attacks were reported near Beirut and other parts of southern Lebanon.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military said it intercepted drones and projectiles crossing into its territory. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for targeting Israeli military positions in response to ongoing operations.

Israeli leaders have warned that any renewed attacks on northern Israeli communities could trigger a broader military response, including operations near Hezbollah strongholds around Beirut.

Hezbollah Distances Itself From Negotiations

While Lebanese officials have indicated acceptance of certain ceasefire terms, Hezbollah representatives have publicly questioned the legitimacy of the negotiations.

Members of the group’s leadership stated that they do not consider themselves bound by discussions held between Lebanese and Israeli officials. Hezbollah has maintained that it does not recognize the outcomes of the talks and will continue making its own decisions regarding military actions.

The differing positions highlight the challenges facing negotiators attempting to secure a lasting peace agreement.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

The ongoing conflict has created a severe humanitarian situation across Lebanon. According to international organizations, more than one million people have been displaced since the fighting intensified.

Large numbers of families remain in temporary shelters with limited access to food, clean water, and healthcare services. Residents in affected areas continue to call for a nationwide ceasefire rather than localized agreements that protect only specific regions.

Healthcare officials have also raised concerns over attacks affecting medical workers and emergency services, arguing that such incidents further worsen conditions for civilians caught in the conflict.

Background of the Conflict

The latest phase of fighting began after Hezbollah launched attacks against Israel following a major regional escalation involving Iran. Israel responded with extensive airstrikes and military operations inside Lebanon.

Since then, both sides have exchanged regular attacks despite several diplomatic efforts to restore calm. Previous ceasefire attempts failed to fully stop the violence, leading to continued instability along the border.

Israel classifies Hezbollah as a terrorist organization, a designation shared by several Western countries including the United States and the United Kingdom.

Trump Pushes for Regional Stability

US President Donald Trump has played a key role in recent diplomatic efforts. Reports suggest he personally encouraged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to avoid further escalation in Beirut and support negotiations aimed at reducing hostilities.

Trump has also indicated that he wants discussions regarding Lebanon to remain separate from broader negotiations involving Iran, believing that individual agreements may improve the chances of success.

However, Iranian officials have warned that any regional peace arrangement must also address developments in Lebanon, adding another layer of complexity to ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Uncertain Road Ahead

Although the new ceasefire proposal offers a potential path toward stability, significant obstacles remain. Continued military exchanges, disagreements over implementation, and Hezbollah’s reluctance to endorse the negotiations publicly could complicate progress.

For now, international mediators are focused on ensuring that both sides maintain restraint while preparing for the next round of talks later this month.
