Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has returned to Adiala Jail after undergoing a brief medical examination at Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad.
The 73-year-old was transferred from the Rawalpindi prison under tight security after Pakistan’s Supreme Court ordered authorities to arrange an independent assessment of his health. He remained at the private hospital for only a few hours before being taken back to jail.
Why Was Imran Khan Taken to Hospital?
Khan’s family, lawyers and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party have repeatedly raised concerns about his health in prison. His legal team claims that his condition has deteriorated and that he has experienced significant vision loss in his right eye.
Responding to those concerns, the Supreme Court instructed authorities to move Khan to Shifa International Hospital within 48 hours. The order also called for his condition to be assessed by a medical panel that included specialist doctors and his personal physician.
Hundreds of police and paramilitary personnel were reportedly deployed around the hospital ahead of his arrival, while PTI asked its supporters not to gather outside the facility.
Government Says Khan Is Medically Fit
Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said a team comprising a cardiologist, an ophthalmologist and a physician examined Khan and declared him medically fit. He also said Khan’s sister, Uzma Khan, remained present during the hospital visit.
The government has maintained that earlier medical reports did not identify any condition requiring urgent hospital treatment. PTI and Khan’s relatives, however, continue to seek regular access to independent doctors and more transparency about his health.
Khan Remains in Prison
Imran Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023 and is serving sentences connected to multiple cases. He denies wrongdoing and says the legal proceedings against him are politically motivated, an allegation rejected by Pakistani authorities.
The short hospital visit may have addressed the immediate court order, but questions surrounding Khan’s health, access to his family and continued imprisonment remain firmly in the spotlight.
