Belgium produced one of the most dramatic comebacks of the FIFA World Cup 2026, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat Senegal 3-2 after extra time in their Round of 32 clash in Seattle on Thursday, July 2.
The European side looked set for an early exit before captain Youri Tielemans calmly converted a penalty in the 125th minute, sealing an unforgettable victory and keeping Belgium’s World Cup title hopes alive.
The decisive moment came after Senegal’s Lamine Camara was judged to have fouled Tielemans inside the penalty area. Following a VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot, and Tielemans confidently fired his effort into the top corner.
Senegal had dominated for most of the contest and appeared firmly in control after taking a 2-0 lead. Habib Diarra opened the scoring in the 25th minute after reacting quickest to a rebound inside the box. Earlier, Ismaila Sarr had already struck the post, signaling Senegal’s attacking intent.
Belgium struggled to respond before halftime, with goalkeeper Mory Diaw producing an impressive save to deny Maxim De Cuyper.
The African side doubled their advantage shortly after the restart. Moussa Niakhate delivered a superb long pass that Ismaila Sarr controlled brilliantly before powering his finish past Thibaut Courtois in the 51st minute.
With Belgium facing elimination, coach Domenico Tedesco introduced Romelu Lukaku at halftime in an effort to change the game. The experienced striker sparked the comeback in the closing minutes, finishing Thomas Meunier’s low cross to reduce the deficit.
Just minutes later, Belgium found the equaliser as Leandro Trossard delivered a dangerous ball into the penalty area, where Tielemans rose to head home and force the match into extra time.
Extra time remained tightly contested until the closing moments. In stoppage time, Camara’s challenge inside the box resulted in a late penalty after VAR intervention, allowing Tielemans to complete Belgium’s remarkable turnaround from the spot.
Belgium will now face the winner of the Round of 32 match between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 16, with the next fixture also scheduled to take place in Seattle on July 6.
For Senegal, the defeat will be difficult to accept after controlling large portions of the game and striking the woodwork twice. They became the fourth African nation to be eliminated in the Round of 32 by a one-goal margin, joining South Africa, Ivory Coast and the Democratic Republic of Congo in exiting the tournament.
