The Election Commission of India has issued notices to several prominent voters in Delhi as part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. BJP veteran L.K. Advani, former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and BJP MLA Kailash Gahlot are among those named in the list.
The notices relate to discrepancies identified during the verification of voter details. Officials have clarified that receiving an SIR notice does not automatically mean that a voter’s name will be removed from the electoral roll.
Why were the Delhi SIR notices issued?
The notices were issued after discrepancies were identified while checking information submitted by voters during the SIR process.
One category, described as “no mapping,” covers voters whose details could not be linked to the electoral roll from the previous revision. Another category concerns logical discrepancies or mismatches in information provided through enumeration forms.
According to officials, the verification process is ongoing and documents submitted by affected voters will be examined before the final electoral rolls are prepared.
Former deputy prime minister L.K. Advani has received a notice under the “no mapping” category. His daughter Pratibha Advani and daughter-in-law Geetika have also been issued notices, while his son Jayant’s entry cleared the mapping process, according to officials cited in reports.
The family members concerned are registered voters in the New Delhi Assembly constituency.
Former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia is also among the voters who received an SIR notice.
His wife Seema and son Meer have also been issued notices. Officials cited in reports said Seema’s entry involved a mismatch in her name, while Meer’s notice referred to a discrepancy involving his parent’s name. The specific reason for Sisodia’s own notice was not stated in the available information.
BJP MLA Kailash Gahlot, who previously served as a minister in the AAP government, has also been included among voters served notices during the Delhi SIR exercise.
Gahlot and his wife, Moushamu Mishra Gahlot, were reportedly flagged under the “no mapping” category.
ECI clarifies that notices do not mean voter deletion
The Delhi Chief Electoral Officer has clarified that an SIR notice should not be interpreted as an automatic removal of a person’s name from the voter list.
Officials said that no elector can have their name deleted without being given an opportunity to present their case. A proper order must also be passed before any deletion takes place.
The wider exercise has affected 33.13 lakh voters in Delhi who were issued notices over discrepancies in their electoral details. Several other prominent figures, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, former vice-president Jagdeep Dhankhar and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, have also been reported among those receiving notices.
The verification of voter records is continuing, with the final electoral roll expected to reflect entries after the required checks and document verification.
