The Delhi High Court has upheld the Indian government’s decision to impose a temporary ban on Telegram in connection with the RE-NEET 2026 examination controversy. In a significant ruling, the court declined to grant relief to the messaging platform, stating that the authorities had acted within the framework of the law.
While delivering its verdict, the High Court observed that the government had followed the required legal procedure before issuing the emergency order. The judges noted that the reasons cited for the action were sufficient and justified considering the circumstances surrounding the case.
The court also rejected the argument that Telegram should be treated differently under the relevant legal provisions. According to the ruling, there was no valid reason to exclude the messaging app from the definition of “information” under the applicable regulations. The bench further stated that the government’s order was well-reasoned and did not suffer from a lack of proper consideration.
The temporary restriction on Telegram stems from concerns over the platform’s role in the alleged circulation of sensitive RE-NEET 2026 examination material. Authorities argued that some Telegram groups, capable of accommodating up to 200,000 members, could facilitate the rapid spread of confidential information, making it difficult to control leaks once they occur.
The High Court acknowledged that certain features of the platform could contribute to the large-scale dissemination of content, supporting the government’s decision to take immediate preventive measures. The court emphasized that emergency actions are permissible when public interest and the integrity of important national examinations are at stake.
With this verdict, the Delhi High Court has reinforced the government’s authority to take swift action against digital platforms in exceptional situations, particularly when concerns over public order and examination security arise. The ruling is expected to have broader implications for how online communication platforms are regulated during sensitive national events.
Telegram has not received any relief from the court for now, and the temporary restrictions imposed by the government will continue to remain in effect unless further legal developments take place.
