The agreement aims to strengthen economic cooperation by reducing trade barriers, expanding market access, and encouraging investments. It is expected to significantly increase bilateral trade while making Indian exports more competitive in the UK market.
99% of Indian Exports Get Zero-Duty Access
One of the biggest highlights of the India-UK FTA is that nearly 99% of Indian exports will now enjoy duty-free access to the British market. This removes import tariffs on thousands of products, giving Indian manufacturers and exporters a major competitive advantage.
Industries expected to benefit include:
- Textiles and garments
- Leather products
- Gems and jewellery
- Engineering goods
- Pharmaceuticals
- Marine products
- Agricultural products
Lower tariffs are expected to increase exports, improve profitability, and generate new employment opportunities across export-oriented sectors.
Benefits for Indian Professionals
The agreement also provides relief for Indian professionals working in the UK through the Double Contribution Convention. Eligible employees temporarily working in the UK will not have to make social security contributions in both countries for a specified period, reducing financial burden for workers and employers.
The FTA also improves access for professionals in sectors such as information technology, financial services, engineering, and consulting.
What Changes for Indian Consumers?
The trade pact will gradually reduce tariffs on several premium British products entering India.
Products expected to become more affordable over time include:
- Scotch whisky
- Luxury automobiles
- Cosmetics
- Medical devices
- Select food products
However, tariff reductions on sensitive products will happen in phases and under agreed quotas to protect domestic industries.
Boost for Businesses and Investment
The India-UK FTA is expected to encourage greater investment between the two countries by simplifying trade procedures and improving market access.
Businesses are also expected to benefit from:
- Simplified customs procedures
- Better regulatory cooperation
- Reduced non-tariff barriers
- Stronger supply chain integration
- Expanded opportunities for MSMEs
Government officials believe the agreement will strengthen India’s position as a global manufacturing and export hub.
A Major Step in India’s Global Trade Strategy
The implementation of the India-UK FTA reflects India’s broader strategy of expanding trade partnerships with major economies. Officials expect the agreement to increase exports, create jobs, strengthen manufacturing, and improve long-term economic growth while deepening strategic ties with the United Kingdom.
