Before policemen rush in, a man in a green T-shirt slaps Mr Macron in the face. Meanwhile, the president is being dragged away.
According to French media, two men have been arrested as a result of the event.
It was afterwards described as a “isolated event” by President Macron.
“We must not let ultra-violent people take over the public debate: they do not deserve it,” he told French newspaper Le Dauphiné.
As he slapped the president, the man reportedly yelled “Down with Macron-ism,” as well as “Montjoie, Saint-Denis,” the historic Kingdom of France’s battle cry, in allusion to King Charlemagne’s banner.
Shortly after the incident, Mr Macron briefly returned to the barrier and interacted with the audience again, as seen in the video.
“I continued and I will continue,” he later told Le Dauphiné. “Nothing will stop me.”
The identity of the man who slapped Macron was unknown, as were his intentions. He may be heard hitting the president while chanting “Montjoie Saint-Denis,” the war-cry of the French troops when the country was still a monarchy.
