Delhi Building Collapse: Death Toll Rises to Six as Rescue Operations Continue

Delhi building collapse

A tragic Delhi building collapse in the Satya Niketan area of southwest Delhi has claimed six lives, while 11 people have been rescued from the debris. Rescue teams continued operations through the night as authorities searched the rubble for anyone who may still be trapped.

The multi-storey building, reportedly being used as paying guest accommodation for students, collapsed on Sunday afternoon, triggering a large-scale emergency response involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police and other agencies.

Rescue Operation Continues at Satya Niketan

Emergency teams were rushed to the site after authorities received information about the collapse at around 1:30 p.m. Rescue workers faced heavy debris while attempting to locate and evacuate people trapped inside the structure. Eleven people were rescued during the operation, although several casualties were also reported. The death toll later rose to six after another body was recovered during late-night rescue efforts. Teams from the NDRF, fire services and police continued clearing debris and conducting searches.

The incident also prompted the evacuation of nearby buildings considered potentially unsafe. Medical teams and ambulances were deployed, while injured survivors were taken to hospitals, including AIIMS Trauma Centre and Safdarjung Hospital.

Illegal Construction Under Investigation

Preliminary inquiries have raised questions about construction and renovation work reportedly being carried out inside the building.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said excavation work in the basement may have affected a pillar, potentially contributing to the collapse.

Investigators are examining whether the work had the required permissions. Officials are also looking into reports that the building was old and had undergone changes over the years. The basement was reportedly prone to waterlogging, which is another factor being examined as part of the investigation.

Delhi Police registered an FIR against the alleged building owner and others in connection with the incident. The authorities said multiple teams had been formed to trace those allegedly responsible.

Government Orders Probe Into Building Safety

The Delhi government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the Delhi building collapse and directed that those responsible face legal action. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has also ordered immediate action against illegal constructions exceeding four floors.

The tragedy has renewed concerns over the safety of buildings being used as PG accommodation in densely populated parts of Delhi. Questions have also been raised over unauthorised construction, structural safety and the enforcement of building regulations.

As rescue teams continue their search, the focus remains on locating anyone who could still be trapped beneath the debris and providing medical assistance to those injured. The incident has also intensified calls for stronger checks on old and structurally vulnerable buildings across the capital.
