Bollywood Actor Mushtaq Khan Dies at 57 After Cancer Battle

Mushtaq Khan dies

Veteran Bollywood actor Mushtaq Khan, whose comic timing lit up dozens of Hindi films, television shows and stage productions over a career spanning decades, passed away in Mumbai on Thursday evening. He was 57. Khan died at around 7 pm at Nanavati Hospital, where he had been admitted for treatment roughly two weeks earlier. His health had reportedly deteriorated in the final days, and he was moved to intensive care shortly before his death.

The actor had been battling cancer for several years. He was first diagnosed roughly five years ago and appeared to have recovered, but the illness returned around a week before his death, forcing his hospitalisation. Multiple reports indicate the cancer originated in his lungs and had since spread further, complicating his treatment in the weeks leading up to his passing.

Born in Baihar, a small town in the Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh, Khan built an extensive career as a character actor, appearing in supporting roles across Hindi cinema, television serials and theatre productions. While he rarely held top billing, filmmakers frequently wrote scenes designed specifically around his comic sensibility, and he became a familiar, dependable presence in the industry over the years.

He is best remembered for playing Ballu in the 2007 blockbuster comedy Welcome, alongside Akshay Kumar, Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor and Paresh Rawal. His character’s running joke about having an artificial leg and being a champion hockey player became one of the film’s most quoted moments and cemented his place in popular memory long after the film’s release. Beyond Welcome, Khan appeared in a string of notable titles including Aashiqui, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, contributing memorable supporting turns across a range of genres. News of his death has drawn tributes from colleagues and industry bodies who worked alongside him over the decades, many recalling his warmth off-screen as much as his comic gifts on it. Further details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by his family in the coming days.
