Apple just held its biggest software event in years, and the headline isn’t just a new iOS update. It’s a fully rebuilt Siri that Apple is calling Siri AI — and the catch? You’ll need to get in line first.
At WWDC 2026, Apple unveiled iOS 27 alongside macOS 27 Golden Gate, a redesigned Siri AI, and a wave of new Apple Intelligence features spread across its entire product lineup. The keynote was software-first, packed, and clearly had one main story: Siri is finally getting the overhaul users have been waiting years for.
The New Siri AI — But There’s a Waitlist
Apple announced Siri AI with a dedicated standalone app at the event. Developers who have already downloaded the iOS 27 beta are discovering that the new assistant isn’t immediately usable — it sits behind a waitlist, and Apple hasn’t said how long the wait will actually be.
If you want access, the steps are straightforward: install the iOS 27 beta, open Settings, navigate to the Siri menu, and tap “Join Waitlist.” Apple will notify you once access is granted. Based on how things went when Apple Intelligence first launched with iOS 18, access could arrive within hours of signing up.
Important: Siri AI will not roll out in the EU or China, due to regulatory and compliance requirements in those regions.
What Can the New Siri AI Actually Do?
The upgraded assistant is built on the next generation of Apple Intelligence and brings a significantly deeper feature set than the Siri users have been putting up with for years. Key capabilities include:
- Personal context awareness — Siri can draw on what it knows about you and your apps to give more relevant answers
- System-wide app actions — it can take actions across your iPhone, not just answer questions
- Live web knowledge — real-time information pulled from the internet on any topic
- Natural follow-up questions — conversations feel less robotic and more back-and-forth
- Dynamic Island activation — trigger Siri from the Dynamic Island in addition to the classic “Hey Siri” command
Siri AI also extends beyond the iPhone to Vision Pro, Apple Watch, Mac devices, CarPlay, and AirPods. And yes, it’s powered in part by Google’s Gemini models — a partnership Apple announced earlier this year.

What Else Is New in iOS 27?
Siri gets the headlines, but iOS 27 is a packed update on its own. iCloud Shared Albums now work across Android and Windows devices — finally. Apple Maps gets an upgraded Flyover mode, the Health app adds more advanced cycle tracking features, and the AirPods settings panel inside iOS 27 has been completely redesigned to be cleaner and easier to manage.
The biggest hardware-adjacent update for audio fans: AirPods are finally getting a custom EQ with iOS 27. It’s a small addition, but one that’s been requested for years.

Hidden Foldable iPhone Clues in the Code
Here’s where it gets interesting. Developers digging into the iOS 27 beta have already found code references to “foldState,” “mechanicalAngleDegrees,” and related parameters — clear signals that Apple is building in software support for a foldable device. iOS 27 also introduces full-page widgets, a UI format that makes considerably more sense on a larger, foldable display.
A foldable iPhone is widely expected to launch in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, with a rumored starting price of around $2,000. Apple didn’t announce it at WWDC — but the groundwork is clearly being laid.
The Bigger Picture
WWDC 2026 was also notably Tim Cook’s final keynote as CEO, before he hands the role to hardware chief John Ternus on September 1. The event had a subtle “end of an era” feel to it, even if Apple kept the focus squarely on software.
This is Apple’s third attempt at delivering the deep Siri overhaul it first promised at WWDC 2024. The original upgrade was delayed, Apple settled a lawsuit over undelivered features, and then announced the Gemini integration. The company is clearly still working to close the gap with Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic — but iOS 27 Siri AI is the most serious step it’s taken yet.
