Kylian Mbappe Breaks Ronaldo’s World Cup Knockout Record, Lionel Messi Not Close

Kylian Mbappe World Cup record

France star Kylian Mbappe continues to make history at the FIFA World Cup 2026, delivering another standout performance as Les Bleus secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Sweden in the Round of 32. The 28-year-old forward scored twice to help his side advance to the Round of 16 while also rewriting several World Cup records.

Representing both France and his club, Real Madrid, Mbappe once again showcased why he is considered one of the finest footballers of his generation. His two goals against Sweden not only sealed France’s comfortable win but also elevated him to the top of the list for the most goals scored in FIFA World Cup knockout matches.

With his latest brace, Mbappe now has 10 goals in World Cup knockout fixtures, surpassing Brazilian legends Ronaldo Nazario and Leonidas, who each finished their World Cup careers with eight knockout goals. France icon Just Fontaine and Brazilian great Pele follow with seven goals apiece. Mbappe’s remarkable consistency on football’s biggest stage has placed him alone at the summit of this prestigious record.

The French forward also achieved another milestone during the match. His overall World Cup tally reached 18 goals, moving him ahead of Germany’s Miroslav Klose in the list of the tournament’s highest scorers. Despite still trailing Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who leads the all-time scoring charts with 19 World Cup goals, Mbappe has rapidly closed the gap and remains in contention to claim the top spot in future matches.

Interestingly, while Messi holds the record for the most World Cup goals overall, only five of those strikes have come in knockout-stage matches. Cristiano Ronaldo, another football legend often compared with Messi, never managed to score a goal in the knockout rounds of the FIFA World Cup during his international career. Mbappe’s latest achievement therefore highlights his extraordinary ability to perform when the stakes are highest.

The victory over Sweden also strengthened Mbappe’s chances of winning the Golden Boot at the FIFA World Cup 2026. His sixth goal of the tournament brought him level with Messi in the race for the competition’s top scorer, setting up an exciting battle as the tournament progresses.

France dominated proceedings against Sweden with an impressive attacking display. Much of Mbappe’s success came thanks to the creativity of midfielder Michael Olise, who produced a brilliant performance by registering a hat-trick of assists. Mbappe converted two of those chances with clinical finishing, using his trademark pace and composure to beat the Swedish defence.

France’s 3-0 victory was also historically significant for the national team. It marked their biggest winning margin in a FIFA World Cup knockout match since defeating Brazil 3-0 in the 1998 World Cup final. The result sends the French side into the Round of 16, where they will face Paraguay on July 4 after the South American nation produced a surprise penalty shootout victory over Germany.
